So, you wouldn’t wake your children for the first day of school, after letting them keep their summer routine and stay up until 11:00 the night before. They need to start getting used to going to bed earlier, thus allowing them to naturally wake earlier. The kids need to get in the habit of getting up early enough to have breakfast, get dressed, fix hair and gather their backpacks etc., so that morning chaos is avoided.
Likewise your dog will need to be included in the same routine. He or she needs to be up to get fed, allow the food to process and then be let out with enough time to see what the neighbors and their dogs are doing, smell for rabbits and squirrels, run a few laps and then take care of their business. This will help your dog to be comfortable while your family is out during the day.
Planning ahead helps everyone to be better prepared to start out the day in a good mood and with a good attitude. Remember the song, “School Days, School Days, Good Old Golden Rule Days”? A good attitude sets the tone and makes it easier to exercise the “Golden Rule” of treating others, the way that we want to be treated.
Here’s to a great year ahead!
